Drupal 6.0 installation guide

Today we’ll give you a short, but complete guide, how to install Drupal 6.0 on your webserver. Although the insallation routine is short and clear, we think there is need for such a guide.

The first thing you have to do in order to install Drupal, is to get the source package from the download source. As this is a *.tar.gz archive, you need at least WinRAR installed to unpack it. WinRAR can be achieved here. Choose a destination directory and unpack the archive.

Now it’s time to upload all files to your webserver. Connect to the server via any FTP agent, such as Filezilla and upload all files into a directory. When everything is on your server, go to the URL which directs you to the new Drupal installation. You should see a screen like this:

Choose English as your preferred language if you like. Next to this step you surely will get two error messages:

In order to fix this, you have to do the following:

  1. set the CHMOD for the directory <your directory>/sites/default at least to 0666 during installation
  2. create a directory files within the base directory and set the CHMOD to 0777

Check the requirements again and continue with the database setting:

Insert all of your database information here, to give Drupal access to your database. If all entered data was correct, Drupal should install the core modules and show you a screen like this, where you have to enter some basic site information:

Enter your preferred information and press Save and continue. If everything is okay, Drupal should now be installed on your server. Don’t forget to set the CHMOD for <your directory>/sites/default to 0644 before doing anything else, as this is a security leak.

Have fun with your Drupal 6.0!
